 Health

Signs that your rabbits are healthy

  (A)    Hops around normally,   (B)   Eats and drinks,   (C)  Healthy coat,

  (D)   Clear eyes,    (E) Active and alert and mixes with other rabbits,

   (F)   If tame does not mind being handled.

If your rabbit has a long coat you will need to brush it and remove matted areas of the coat.

Rabbits teeth never stop growing so plenty of chewing sticks are needed, some wood can be harmful so please check before you give them wood from anywhere. Regular checks are needed if you think their teeth are too long, take them to your vet or ask him to call.

Also  keep a watch on your rabbits claws, if thay are too long then get them trimmed. Again your vet or an experienced breeder can do this for you.

The other thing that is very important is to keep their living quarters clean by removing wet and soiled bedding daily and cleaning their hutch out once a week. You can use a mild soap and water solution or you can get a special disinfectant that is safe for animals, let it dry before bedding and rabbits go back in there hutch.

       Health  Problems,

Rabbits are normally hardy and healthy, but now and again things can go wrong for them.

There are a couple of diseases that can be fatal, and you should talk to your vet about getting them vaccinated. This is very important if you intend to show your rabbit.

Other Health Problem,

These are :  (A) Diarrhoea, : if you see dropping that are not normal, or your rabbit has a dirty bottom, also weight loss, then you should contact your vet for a treatment,

                (B)  Heat stroke, : Sometimes if your rabbit does not have shelter from the sun he/she could, just like us, get too hot, (this can be fatal), watch out for distressed breathing, lethargic and not mixing. Take them out of the sun and contact your vet for advice. The best way to avoid this is to make sure your rabbits always have shade on hot days,

                (C)  Malocclusion,: this is the name for overgrown teeth, watch out for weight loss due to not feeding properly, get them treated by a vet as soon as possible,It is advised that if breeding your rabbit and the vet confirms Malocclusion then you should not breed from it again as this is a genetic fault and a very bad one,

                                               (D)  Mites :  if you see skin lesions and your rabbits have patches of hair loss contact your vet for a treatment,

                                           (E)  : Tumours, if you see abnormal lumps on the stomach or back , then contact your vet,

                                          (F)   Also : if your rabbits have eye and/or nasal discharge, this could be to do with any of the above or something else, so contact your vet for advice and treatment.
